This is the week for “Small Business Saturday”. More gimmicks are coming up as people across the Atlantic try to make people to spend. However, this campaign goes beyond simply making people to incur expenditure. Started in the US in 2010 by the American Express, the Small Business Saturday is meant to encourage people to shop at their local stores and independent businesses throughout the country as they prepare for Christmas celebrations.
The launch of small business Saturday in the UK has not been commercialized since it entirely done by volunteers, organisations and individuals that dedicate their time and skills in making the un-sponsored launch a success. According to the Enterprise and Skills Minister, Mr. Matthew Hancock, small businesses play an integral part in the UK economy and life would be unbearable without them. He urged everyone to show their support to small businesses during the Small Business Saturday. Both high street stores and small businesses offer value to the economy by providing jobs and giving people avenues for social interaction.
However, very many high streets and town centres are trying to come into terms with the loss of business due to advancement of online shopping. The Saturday of December 7 will see a third of the councils putting up events at local centres, posting webinars and videos on how to grow small businesses while giving other important tips to independent and local shop owners. This information will be available for download at http://www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com.
Different entrepreneurs have already embraced the initiative. For instance, Sarah Willingham has made several short films in a series form on how to market, merchandise, partner and enhance loyalty following her interaction with shop owners within Brighton. She did so in trying to make small business owners take advantage of the Small Business Saturday.
According to Sarah Willingham, this is the period for small businesses and independent merchants to transform their business activity during the year’s busiest shopping period. Each of the films shows ideas that are easy to implement and that any business can associate with. She added that the small businesses she visited had already started after implementing some of the ideas.
